Course Placement

Pine Technical and Community College’s course placement process determines a student's readiness for reading, writing, and mathematics courses. It is used to assist a student with the selection of appropriate courses to help assure a student's success upon entering PTCC. All degree-seeking students are required to satisfy course placement.

ACT, SAT, MCA Scores, and High School GPA
Course placement can be determined using one or a combination of the following:

  • ACT, SAT, and MCA Scores - valid within the last 5 calendar years
  • High school GPA - valid within the last 10 calendar years
  • Completion of college-level coursework from an accredited U.S. college or university

Accuplacer Assessment will be used if the above scores do not meet the college level benchmarks to demonstrate academic readiness to enroll in college-level courses. The Accuplacer is a placement test that assesses skill levels in reading and mathematics. Test results are required for all students and used to determine the appropriate course placement to promote student success in college.

The Accuplacer Placement exam may be used when necessary to determine placement. The Accuplacer can be scheduled in-person by appointment only.

Guided-Self Placement
If students don't have valid high school GPA or other score reports mentioned above, students may choose to use the self-guided placement process to determine course placement. Students should review the Guided-Self Placement resources with an admissions advisor or academic advisor to determine placement using this method.

Re-Evaluating Course Placement
Students may meet with an admissions advisor or academic advisor re-evaluate course placement decisions based on previous scores.

Understanding College-Level Placement at PTCC
Students should review the “College-Level Course Placement Options” resource determine if they have the assessment scores or HS GPA required to place into college-level courses at PTCC.

Accuplacer Preparation

The Accuplacer assessments help to determine the best place to begin a student’s program of study. We want to make sure that your results accurately reflect the courses you should so it is recommended that you take time to prepare. The Accuplacer web-based study app features practice tests in each test subject. It is accessible from most devices with internet access, and will help you become familiar with the content and format of the Accuplacer test questions.

  • “Learn as you go” tests provide you with explanation of the correct or incorrect responses.
  • Sample tests are similar to the real thing, so you’ll know ahead of time what your experience will be like on test day.
  • You can review your score history to see what you’re already doing well and what skills you should focus on improving.

PTCC uses the Next Generation Accuplacer Reading, Arithmetic, QAS and AAF
