Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

Emergency Medical Technician Basic & EMS OPS (9 credits)


EMT and EMS OPS Provide a foundation in Emergency Medical care. The Combined Courses are designed to teach emergency care and transportation of patients who access the emergency medical system along with acquiring the skills and apply the knowledge of operational roles and responsibilities of emergency medical operation professionals to ensure patient, public and personal safety. The EMT course is designed to teach emergency care and transportation of patients who access the emergency medical system obtaining skills in lifting and moving patients, airway management, respiration and artificial ventilation, patient assessment, medical emergencies, trauma and special populations.

Participants who successfully complete the courses will be eligible to take the National Registry of EMT’s practical and written examinations for State and National Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician.

NOTICE: If you have been arrested, charged or convicted of any criminal offense, you should investigate the impact that the arrest, charge or conviction may have on your chances of employment in the field you intend to study or on your changes to obtain federal, state and other higher education financial aid. High Speed Internet is required for outside of class study.

For the clinical experience portion of this class students will be required to complete the MDH background study and provide proof of current Mantoux test.

NCCR EMT Refresher Course


The EMT National Continued Competency Program (NCCR) requires a total of 40 hours of continuing education to recertify. The model contains three components, or 'buckets': a national component, a local or state component, and an individual component. The NCCR EMT Refresher course will meet the 20 hour requirement of the National Requirement.

Every practicing EMT is required to renew their EMT certification every two years.Pine Technical & Community College's Continuing Education & Customized Trainingdivision offers the 20 hour refresher course to help you towards meeting thisrequirement. For the National Registry refresher requirement, this qualities as "F2"Category Education.

To qualify for this course you must have:

  • Current EMT Certification
  • Current Healthcare Provider CPR Card

This 20 hour Refresher course is approved by the NREMT, MN EMSRB, and MN POST Board. 

Classroom Topics Include:

  • Airway/Respiration/Ventilation (Ventilation, Oxygenation)
  • Cardivascular (Post-Resuscitation Care, Ventricular Assist Devices, Stroke, Cardiac Arrest, Pediatric Cardiac Arrest) 
  • Trauma (Trauma Triage, Central Nervous System Injury, Hemorrhage Control) 
  • Medical (Special Needs, OB Emergencies, Infectious Diseases, Pain Management, Psychiaric & Behavioral Emergencies, Toxicological Emergencies - Opoids, Neurological Emergencies - Seizures, Endocrine Emergencies - Diabetes, Immunological Emergencies)
  • Operations (At-Risk Populations, Ambulance Safety, Field Triage - Disasters/MCIs, EMS Culture of Safety, Pediatric Transport, Crew Resource Management, EMS Research, Evidence Based Guidelines)
