This course examines Minnesota’s history from the Native American era up to the present. Student’s will explore topics including geographical aspects of Minnesota’s environment (topography, vegetation, drainage); Native American groups in Minnesota; European exploration and the fur trade; initial American settlement and use of the land; territoriality and statehood; the Dakotah Conflict; the connection between Minnesotans and their natural environment (farming, logging, mining); the Progressive Era and the 1920’s; the Depression and World War II; and the state’s environmental, economic, social, and political history since 1945.
